Here are a few samples of the models Plante Model Shipwrights have constructed. (Click on the pictures below to view a larger version.)

Arbella

  • Armed merchantman; also referred to as an Elizabethian Galleon
  • Built in 1616 in England
  • Named after Lady Arbella who financed the Winthrop Fleet that sailed to Salem, Massachusetts in 1630. This was the beginning of the great migration to the Americas.
This 10 foot model was built for the Arbella Mutual Insurance Co. and is presently in their corporate headquarters in Quincy, Massachusetts. Made of quarter-sawn white oak with hull cut-outs and has internal lighting for viewing.

U.S.S. Constellation

  • 38 gun frigate, 164' long, 1278 tons
  • Built in 1853 and launched in 1854
  • Heavily involved in Civil War service.
  • Flagship of the African Squadron on anti-slavery
  • Largest sailing vessel to enter Rhode Island waters (1894 - 1933)
This ship model is 2 1/2 feet long and constructed of walnut and mahogany with approximately 3200 individual copper plates on her hull.

Charles W. Morgan

  • Built in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1841
  • Overall length was 105 ft. and weighted 351 tons
  • Last of the wooden whaling ships
This two foot long model was made of ancient whalebone and mastadon and was commissioned by a private investor. The original ship is on display in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut.
